A good turf project starts below the surface.
Synthetic turf gives you a lush green lawn all year round without the watering, the mowing or the fertilizing. It suits homeowners, commercial properties and play areas, and it holds up to heavy foot traffic, pets and every kind of weather we get. It stays green through August and through drought restrictions, and it saves a real amount of water every year.
It is not the right answer for every square foot of a yard, and we will tell you which ones. Read on.
Front lawns under watering rules. The City of Bakersfield limits lawn watering to set days and bans it during the day. A front lawn that has to look good from the street with two waterings a week is the classic case.
Dog runs and side yards. No mud, no dead patches, drains through, hoses clean.
Play areas. Soft, even, no bare dirt.
Commercial frontage. From January 2028, California's AB 1572 bars commercial properties from watering decorative lawn with drinking water, and HOA common areas follow in 2029. Turf is one of the two honest answers for a strip of green nobody walks on.
Synthetic turf in full sun runs far hotter than real grass. University of California advisors have measured it, and the numbers on a 100 degree Bakersfield afternoon are high enough to be uncomfortable barefoot and hard on a dog's paws. That is the reason some people take it out, and nobody selling it should pretend otherwise.
So here is how we install it. Lighter blade colors and infill made for heat run cooler than the cheapest option. Turf goes where it is used in the morning and evening, or under a patio cover, not on the west facing patch that bakes from noon to seven. Where you actually sit in summer, a covered patio beats turf every time, and we will say so at the estimate.
Bakersfield does not get much rain, but when it comes it comes hard. Quality turf has a perforated backing and sits on a compacted, free draining base, so water goes straight through into the ground instead of pooling. Dogs are fine on it: the base drains, the surface hoses off, and the infill we use for pets is made to stay clean.
The turf is the visible part. The base is the job.
We measure, look at drainage and sun, and tell you where turf makes sense.
Blade height, color and infill, with samples in your yard.
Nothing starts until you say yes.
Old lawn out, soil dug to depth, sprinklers capped or rerouted.
Aggregate base placed and compacted so the surface stays flat and drains.
Turf laid in one direction, seams joined, edges pinned, infill brushed in.
How to clean it, how to brush it, and what to expect in year one.
We install and maintain both, so this is a straight comparison.
| Artificial grass | Real lawn | |
|---|---|---|
| Water | none | three days a week at most, under city rules |
| Mowing and feeding | none | weekly in season |
| Summer look | green in August | brown patches unless watered hard |
| Heat underfoot | hot in full sun | cool |
| Cools the yard | no | yes |
| Up front cost | higher | lower |
| Dogs | drains and hoses off | mud and dead spots |
The honest split for most Bakersfield yards: turf where it is looked at, real grass or a covered patio where it is sat on.
Heat, mostly, and turf laid on a bad base that went lumpy. Both are avoidable: put turf where it is used in the cooler hours, choose a cooler product, and build the base properly. We do all three and we will tell you when turf is the wrong choice for a spot.
It gets hot in full sun, it does not cool the yard the way real grass does, and it is a higher cost up front than seed or sod. In return: no water, no mowing, no brown patches, and it looks the same in August as it does in April.
It drains. The backing is perforated and the base underneath is built to let water through. If a turf lawn puddles, the base was wrong.
Quality turf carries a manufacturer warranty, commonly 10 to 15 years, and the base and infill decide how it looks along the way. A proper base and a brush now and then is most of the maintenance.
