Hard water and your sprinkler heads
Bakersfield groundwater is moderately hard on average and very hard in parts of the city: Cal Water's own report puts it at 109 parts per million, with a range up to 380. That mineral builds up as scale on nozzles, inside pop up heads and on drip emitters. A head does not fail all at once. It sprays a little less each month until one patch of lawn browns.

The City of Bakersfield sets watering days by street number. Under the Stage 2 rules in place since December 2021, odd numbered addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, even numbered addresses Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, nobody on Monday, and only after 6pm or before 9am. How can I tell if a sprinkler valve is bad?
A zone that never comes on while the others do, a zone that will not shut off, or water seeping at the valve box. Sometimes it is only the solenoid, a quick swap. Sometimes the diaphragm inside has gone. We test at the valve before replacing anything.
