Pavers are a popular choice for backyard patios and other outdoor spaces: a custom surface that installs quickly and is ready to use as soon as it is finished. Available in concrete, brick, natural stone or porcelain, pavers come in a range of shapes, colors and patterns, which is how you get a patio that looks like it was designed rather than poured.
We install pavers as part of a whole yard or on their own. Either way the same crew does the excavation, the base, the laying and the edging, and the same licence covers it.
Where pavers work best
Patios. A comfortable, attractive area for outdoor dining or sitting out once the sun is off it.
Walkways and pathways. Guide people through the yard or to the front door with a stone or brick path.
Driveways. Curb appeal that does not crack the way a slab can, on a base built for vehicle weight.
Pool decks. Slip resistant, and one damaged unit is a one unit repair.
Retaining walls. Wall block pavers for sloped yards, doing a structural job as well as a visual one.

Durable. Built to take the weather and the traffic, with very little maintenance.
Repairable. If one paver cracks or stains, that one paver comes out. You do not redo the surface.
Permeable options. Many pavers let water drain through into the ground, which cuts runoff and helps with drainage.
Versatile. Modern, rustic, formal, plain. Shapes, colors and patterns to match the house.

The base is the job
A paver surface is only as good as what is under it. The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute sets the standard we build to: a compacted aggregate base of at least 4 to 6 inches for patios and walkways and 6 to 8 inches for driveways, compacted in lifts, with a thin screeded bedding layer on top and edge restraint around the whole perimeter. Then the pavers go down, the joints get sanded and the surface is compacted again so the units lock.
Skip any of that and the patio looks fine for a year and then heaves, sinks at the edges or grows weeds through every joint. Bakersfield soil is hard and dry most of the year, which tempts people to lay pavers on it directly. That is the patio you see redone.

No. They will sink, tilt and separate within a season or two. Pavers need a compacted aggregate base, 4 to 6 inches for a patio and 6 to 8 for a driveway, with edge restraint, or the surface does not stay a surface.
Do pavers get hot in the Bakersfield sun?
Every hard surface does in August. Lighter colors stay cooler than dark ones, and a patio cover over the sitting area does more than the paver choice. We will tell you which colors run hot when you pick samples.
Can a damaged paver be replaced?
Yes, one at a time. Lift it, replace it, re-sand the joint. That is the reason many people choose pavers over a slab.
Do you do paver driveways?
Yes. Driveways get a thicker base and a paver rated for vehicle weight, and the edge restraint matters even more.
