What commercial landscaping covers

Commercial landscaping is the landscape around a business: the planting and trees, the sprinkler and drip lines, the concrete, the turf and the lighting. Select Landscape builds it for new buildings around Bakersfield, and repairs it or adds to it at properties that are already open.

This is project work, new landscapes and repairs, not weekly maintenance.

Why Select Landscape?

  • One company for the whole job

The concrete, the irrigation, the planting and the lighting are planned together and built on one schedule.

  • Licensed for landscaping and concrete

Select Landscape holds California's C-27 landscaping and C-8 concrete classifications, and has been licensed since 2015.

  • Scheduled around your hours

The work is planned around your business hours.

Commercial landscaping work we take on

  • Stamped concrete apron in front of a metal workshop

Concrete walkways, pads, dumpster slabs and curbs

Poured at new buildings and at properties that are already open.

  • Sprinklers misting a newly laid lawn inside a concrete border, with bark beds around it

Sprinkler and drip systems, new and repaired

New systems for a new landscape, and repairs where a zone has failed.

  • New landscapes

Planting, trees, rock and bark around a new building or an existing one.

  • Retaining walls and pavers

Walls and pavers, built with the rest of the site work.

  • Artificial turf for frontage and common areas

Where the watering law ends drinking water on decorative lawn.

  • Landscape lighting for entries and walkways

At storefronts and offices, put in with the rest of the job.

Who we work with on commercial projects

Contractors, developers, property managers and businesses around Bakersfield.

  1. General contractors: send us the landscape plans and specifications for a project that needs to be bid.

  2. Developers: landscapes for new construction.

  3. Property managers: irrigation repairs, new planting, and turf where a lawn can no longer be watered.

  4. Businesses: the planting, concrete and lighting at a storefront or office.

Business properties and California's lawn watering law

California's AB 1572 ends watering decorative lawn with drinking water, on a date set by the kind of property:

PropertyDrinking water on decorative lawn endsCertifying to the State every three years starts
Public properties, school districts includedJanuary 1, 2027June 30, 2029
Commercial, industrial and institutional propertiesJanuary 1, 2028June 30, 2030
Homeowner association common areasJanuary 1, 2029June 30, 2031

Certifying applies where 5,000 square feet or more is irrigated, and the State has not issued the form yet.

Decorative lawn is grass nobody uses: strips around a parking lot, lawn along a sidewalk or a building edge, the grass in a median or around an entry sign. Cal Water's rule of thumb is that if the only time people walk on it is to mow it, it probably counts. Trees, lawn watered with recycled water, and lawn people actually use are exempt.

The grass does not have to come out by then, but it cannot be watered with drinking water. The usual answers are artificial turf or planting on a drip system, and we install both.

The rules already in force apply in the meantime. Cal Water bans watering from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on every day for every customer, and the City of Bakersfield has kept mandatory restrictions on its own water system since 2021. A controller set to your water company's hours keeps a Bakersfield property within the rules.

Commercial landscaping questions

Do you do commercial landscape maintenance?

No. We build and repair commercial landscapes. We don't take weekly maintenance, mowing or gardening contracts.

Do you take new construction projects?

Yes. A plot plan, landscape plan or construction plans help us review the project and prepare a more accurate bid.

Can you price a project without coming out?

For some simple projects, photos, measurements or plans are enough for a general range. Most projects need a visit to the site for an accurate bid.
